Alpha PDF's

I have sent a real ghetto alpha PDF to firsty, root, and jedite83 of the intro chapters, free food, free clothing, free shelter and free transport (top of TOC through Sail Away) as a Volume I alpha for steal this book today. once we have a download link you will have something to print, since this is a very early alpha I didn't bother to actually stick the pics in (there are sized placeholders) and the .PDF table of contents has no page numbers due to expected movement and edits. Ploney feb 3 2008

I just did part two the rest of Survive as vol2 and sent it off. Maybe I will do Fight this week as well, Liberate AKA free cities will be much more difficult as there has been very little attention given to most cities, mostly the template is laid down and one or two useful sentences are added, not enough to make an article, ideas for Liberate? Ploney feb 3 2008

Part of the work for this alpha version is removing wikified links, if you want a web link in the PDF you must have it in plain text or it just gets snipped from the text, I am working from a download site scrape of feb2 08 so edits now wont help. Ploney feb 3 2008

I have posted both Vol 1 and 2. I have started a list for Alpha 0.0 to list all sites with this release. Please list any site with this release there. when 0.1 comes out we will add a section to the list for it. Also list a link to the page the book is on and not just the front page of the site (makes it easer to find users are looking for) Jedite83 10:49, 3 February 2008 (MST)

Vol 3 is done and shipped, inserted some schematics and required charts that text just won't explain, Firsty is working on cleaning up the .ODT files (open office format) for the next release, maybe good enough to be a beta. We need some illustrations, I will leave that up to Firsty to list the required pictures and line art. Ploney feb 3 08

Will you / can you add the schematics / charts to the wiki if they are already not there? Jedite83 12:32, 3 February 2008 (MST)

- My thoughts on versions, distribution, and new content
This effort has been going on for over a year and a half, we are reaching the point where we start to see some bloat in our work, it is already over 500 pages before pics (I still think most content is vital). While the PDF and ODT files are free to distribute now and always will be I am wondering if we should keep the alpha PDF's available only here for now (and @hackerlabs as a backup) so there wont be dozens of versions floating about the net in 15-20 years(not that we could stop anyone if they wanted to post/host them)just like the many versions of the old BBS anarchy files of yore. We are one of the few current smart and realistic books aimed at the serious rebel which discusses the whole range of options for just about every level of oppression and recession, so I would perfer to make our polished final release the easiest to find on the net in the years to come, since it has such potential. On the other hand I also want a useful guide in the hands of those who need it as soon as possible (as our economy crumbles and CorpGof plays the grab everything repo game folks will be pissed). I am proud of the colaboration we have had in the past year and a half, now it is time to let a few editors clean up this work and allow public comment on the editing. The wiki is still important and will always be a resource and a gathering point for new ideas which migh be included in newer releases. The source files will be available to everyone to create drivitave works like college budget living or youth hostel hopper guides or even forks of the work (please rename it though). I will ship the feb2 scrapes as a tar.gz to root, firsty, and jedite to use for editing and it will be up to Firsty to decide where to go from here. Ploney feb 3 2008

If we (try to) maintain a list of all versions / mirrors hosting all versions people would be better able to find the current full version when it comes out. We do need to try to make the full versions (when relesed) the one that is widely distributed and easiest to find. I have to fully agree with Ploney. Also when latter versions come out I will start to compile a few drivitave works and post them (we will worry about that later tho...) Jedite83 13:26, 3 February 2008 (MST)
Regarding the bloat: Maybe we should remove the original STB text from the site. Mostly the new content builds from that and makes having the original text repetitive (however we should have a page with the original text so people can enjoy that also - just remove it from the pages with new content.)Jedite83 01:41, 5 February 2008 (MST)

Vol4 Liberate is in the can, those cities with critical mass of information were included. Thats it for Steal This Book Today alpha 0.00!! Congrats everyone!! Find someone elses printer (corpgov prefered) and get to work making hard copies.

And once you print them be sure to bind them well Records and Books#Books

umm...

Please use the address http://www.hackerlabs.net.nyud.net/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=908 or http://www.hackerlabs.net/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=908 when linking to the Hacker Labs mirror of the book. This will help me to keep tabs on my bandwidth usage and what is popular on my server. Other then tat, link away! Jedite83 12:43, 20 February 2008 (MST)

That link requires user registration. I'm not in favor of requiring user registration to view our content, especially since registration is not required to download the book from any of the other mirrors. If you could open it up to all users, that would be much appreciated -- if not, then I'll make an appropriate note when linking to your pages. Root 14:09, 20 February 2008 (MST)
I have removed the registration requirement. Thanks for mentioning that so I could fix it. I alswo changed the page the links pointed to to be the right page. Jedite83 20:37, 20 February 2008 (MST)

April Alpo Try

I think I will give another alpha try after doing a site scrape April 1, no promises but if anyone has something important that they want to get in do it before then, I would also love to get some good pix or line drawing illustrations for many of the techniques we mention, I might start a page like Picture Requests for everyone to go through the wiki and request pix where they feel they are needed. What needs to happe is a few people to take control of slices of the wiki and look it over for clarity and usefulenss. I also want to start snipping out the old STB content that is not useful or just plain wrong unless we are using it as a way to introduce an important point. If I can find the time to do this right unlike the last quick slap together so we have something it might just end up being a beta quality. Ploney

Shipped the unified alpha 0.10 file, it needs lots of polish and proofing. but the problems are mostly cosmetic. PDF and Open Office ODT files will be available at hackerlabs. A big problem si the divergance from the wiki, other than special code to allow instant PDF publishing and spellcheck I don't know how to fix this. We need feedback on how the PDF looks and reads.
